I took this drone video footage back in mid-October when I was working as a volunteer for a community event called the Dam Fine Car Show. I had received permission from the US Army Corps of Engineers to launch and fly from their property for the event. I took some time after the event was over to get this extra footage in the gorge area near the spillway. I only wish I’d had more time to spend their flying around getting footage because this is rather short.
In this video I’m trying to use the background music to help set the scene for the magnificence and destruction that the flood of 2002 caused when the water overflowed the dam’s spillway.
About 34 in of rain had fallen in less than a week upstream and downstream. The level of the water in the lake reached a dangerous levels never seen before since the reservoir have been built in 1964.
You can read the video text description on YouTube for more details about the event that happened in 2002. There’s a link to the gorge website where you can find out information about taking a guided tour that lets you hike down through the area.
