2021 ARRL Field Day Setup by San Antonio Radio Club W5SC

ARRL Field Day is the most popular on-the-air event held annually in the US and Canada. On the fourth weekend of June, more than 35,000 radio amateurs gather with their clubs, groups or simply with friends to operate from remote locations.

San Antonio Radio Club, call sign W5SC, held their annual Field Day event in the City of Shavano Park, next to their city hall and one of the county’s backup 911 centers. In 2019, they used a tent and everybody crowded into it. In 2020, the event was practically canceled by the Covid-19 virus and members operated from their houses instead of gathering together for a combined event. In 2021, with Covid-19 restrictions being loosened with the availability of vaccines, the club chose to return to Shavano Park only to find out the city had built a huge pavilion in the field where they normally put antennas. The city allowed them to use this new facility and they were able to spread out the stations, instead of being crowded elbow to elbow inside the club’s large tent.

This short video was made while they were still installing antennas and getting ready for the event to officially start at 12pm EST on Saturday. The event runs 24 hours, ending at 12pm EST on Sunday.
